I have continued the grand adventure in running - thanks, in large part, to Amy's suggestion about the Couch to 5K program. Having a very specific workout has helped immensely. And I'm happy to say that the running is going very well (though I still think running more miles than you can count on one hand is just crazy).
However. It has recently come to my attention that I'm doing something somewhat unorthodox. You see, when I mention running in casual conversation, it usually goes something like this: "When I was running the other day, I was listening to my NPR podcast, and I heard that..." [fits of laughter from whoever I'm talking to]. Apparently, listening to NPR while running isn't normal.
While I do LOVE my NPR podcasts (I never drive, so how else will I get my NPR fix??), and don't intend to give them up, I understand that music might also be a good running motivator. I particularly came to understand the power of music when I was in Arkansas for Easter, and I had the pleasure of taking a spin class that my dad teaches. He uses GOOD music, and it definitely gets you going.
So, I need your help to compile a really, really good playlist for running. I need upbeat, peppy tracks, people. Please help! I'm seriously musically challenged.

I like Dead or Alive - Rip it up. Very 80's, but a solid 35 minutes of up. I also go for Erasure, the Run Lola Run soundtrack (german dance music) and occasionally Rage Against the Machine. I discovered the power of music a few years ago when I broke down and joined the fitness center at work. I would get tired and bored after 15 min on the elliptical, yet I could dance all night at a club. Hmmmm....
Wait wait wait...your DAD teaches spinning? That's kind of awesome! :)
One thing I would suggest is checking out the playlists on the Nike Plus website. (Go to "Gear and Music" and then to the "Sport Mixes" link. It will open up the Sport Mixes area of the iTunes Music Store. You can browse the mixes for ideas without actually buying anything.)
Also, if the iPod in question is a Nano, I HIGHLY recommend the Nike Plus. Awesome gadget.
I've actually stopped running for the time being because of horrible knee problems. But I hope to get back to it eventually.
I have an awesome mix that gets my pumped up. Here's a few excerpts:
Last Night by The Strokes
Let's Get Retarded by the Black Eyes Peas
Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet
Walkin' On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves
It Takes Two by Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock
Hey Ya by Andre 3000 (Outkast)
Oh and I totally agree with Rebecca's Rage Against the Machine recommendation. I only listen to Evil Empire when I work out because it reminds me of high school but save it for when you really need to break through a wall. The anger and "Rage" really helps me push harder.
I like Hooked on Classics, #1 and #3. I use them on the ellipitical trainer in the GYM and they work great. It's classical music set to a steady beat- you'll love the music! Grandma B
I might recommend my iPod... it should have most everything you need.
That's great that running is working for you! Keep it up!
My nano is full of Rush songs I love that are upbeat and motivating, but most are just slightly too fast or slightly too slow. The advantage of Amy's NikePlus gadget is knowing your pace so you can pick songs that support or enhance your pace. The Nike sport mix list could help make sure your songs fit your stride well. Good luck finding good tunes!
